ENS 104A – Beginning Weight Training

PURPOSE:  This course is designed to provide an educational, supervised weightlifting environment, which allows students to gain basic knowledge of weight training principles, lifting techniques, and training strategies.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  This is an activity class with an academic component.  Be prepared to pay attention and take notes, as there will be written exams and projects throughout the semester.  By the end of the semester you will be able to:

1.      Understand basic musculo-skeletal anatomy

2.      Demonstrate proper lifting techniques

3.      Describe the components of a well designed, comprehensive fitness program

4.      Understand the importance of nutrition and how it affects your weight training program

5.      Create your own personalized weight training program designed to meet your specific goals

6.      Describe proper exercise order, selection, and principles in creating a program

7.      Define terms related to basic weight training and how they relate to customizing a program to meet individual needs

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:  This class officially begins on the hour.  50 minutes is not all that long so be prepared to start and end at the designated times.  You are expected to ATTEND and PARTICIPATE in all sessions, which requires proper attire.  For safety reasons, you may not work out if you are not dressed properly.  (T-shirts, loose fitting pants or shorts, CLOSE TOE SHOES)

 

PARTICIPATION:   This is an activity class, which means you must attend class in order to participate.  Students arriving late, leaving early, dressed improperly, or not participating will be counted as absent as well.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  As per the University’s Policy on attendance you must provide the instructor with written notice of days that will be missed during the semester for University sanctioned events or religious observances by the second week of class.  Other absences that cannot be prevented will be handled on an individual basis.

0-2       absences           30 points

3          absences           25 points

4          absences           20 points

5          absences           15 points

6+        absences           10 points

7+        absences             0 points

 

GRADING:  Course grades will be assigned according to the following scale.

 

            PARTICIPATION                                           30 points

            EXERCISE PRESENTATION                        15 points         

            EXAM 1                                                          20 points

            EXAM 2                                                          20 points

            PERSONAL PROGRAM                                15 points

 

            TOTAL                                                            100 points

 

LATE WORK:  Late work will not be accepted.  Extenuating circumstances that prevent you from turning in your work on time will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

       100%-90%           A

         89%-87%           B+

         86%-80%           B

         79%-77%           C+

         76%-70%           C

         69%-67%           D+

         66%-60%           D

         59% and below     F

                                                                               

NOTE:  You may take the class for Credit/No Credit by following University policies and procedures.  According to policy, a “C” or better must be earned in order to receive credit for the course.
