REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Faculty International Travel and Activities

Office of International Programs
Division of Academic Affairs

Spring 2007

PROPOSALS DUE MARCH 26, 2007

As part of an ongoing effort to expand faculty involvement in international research and education projects that benefit students through increased international and study abroad opportunities, the Office of International Programs (OIP) will again offer modest grants. Recipients of these awards may receive up to $3,500 for the purpose of generating educational connections and activities that will lead to greater involvement of students and faculty in international educational experiences. All activities and travel should take place before June 15, 2008. A faculty committee will review all proposals.

Priority will be given to proposals that address certain areas. They are, in order of priority:

1. Proposals that develop international experiences for students by schools, departments or programs requiring study abroad, or by departments that demonstrate they are moving toward requiring study abroad.
2. Proposals that develop semester (including summer) study abroad programs and travel study programs.
3. Proposals that target groups of students going to a particular location or region, especially where SDSU already has an existing program.
4. Proposals submitted by groups of faculty, especially from different disciplines.
5. Student exchange proposals that build on existing exchange programs.

In addition to traditional study abroad and exchange programs, OIP strongly encourages those proposals establishing international internships and international research experiences for students.

Proposals that combine elements of the priority areas will be given special consideration.

It should be noted that traveling to a foreign university or institute only to develop a cooperative agreement is not a high priority. The emphasis should be on the development of a solid program that involves SDSU students and that will produce measurable results. A cooperative agreement may or may not be needed to facilitate that effort.

Only SDSU faculty can be supported by these grants.  A faculty member may be a PI, Co-PI, or recipient of funds for only one proposal submitted for this competition.

For a complete listing of existing programs, consult the OIP web page at:

http://oip.sdsu.edu and the International Student Center web page at:
http://www.sa.sdsu.edu/isc/iscindex.html.

Detailed information about establishing international agreements between SDSU and international partners can be found at the OIP web site, under "Travel Grant Guidelines: A Guide to International Exchanges" The OIP website also includes reports filed by previous recipients of travel grants.

PROPOSALS ARE DUE MARCH 26, 2007. One copy is to be submitted to department chairs/school directors, a second copy to the college dean and eleven (11) copies to the Office of International Programs. The department chairs/school directors and deans will forward their comments to the Office of International Programs by April 9, 2007. The department chairs/school directors and deans should provide comments on the following:

* Are the proposed program's possibilities clearly defined and realistic?
* Is there a high likelihood that students in the department will be interested in studying in the proposed subject area at a foreign university, specifically at the destination being proposed?
*Is the department interested in exploring programs at that destination?
* Is anyone else in the department proposing to travel to that destination?
* Is the proposed budget realistic, under grant guidelines?
* If additional funds are needed, will the department be able to provide funds?

Upon returning to SDSU, faculty will be expected to promote and support programs that develop from their activities abroad, submit a brief report and make a short presentation to relevant faculty and students about opportunities for SDSU students to participate in international experiences. All grant recipients, whether their project involves their
own foreign travel or not, will be expected to provide a written report summarizing their project.
