SDSU aims to have
30 percent of the graduating class studying abroad by 2005-2006. Toward
that goal seven degree programs on campus now require an international
experience as part of their degree requirements: International Business,
International Emphasis in Economics, the University Honors Program, International
Security and Conflict Resolution (ISCOR), Spanish, European Studies and
the ISCOR minor. Other departments that strongly encourage an international
experience, or are moving to require one are Latin American Studies, Women's
Studies, Chicano/Chicana Studies, Political Science and Hospitality and
Tourism Management
Since 2001 OIP has
allocated over $243,000 in funding to help defray the costs of student
travel. Funds are awarded to individual departments, with priority given
to those that require study abroad as degree requirement.
In support of our
goal to provide an internationally oriented faculty, we have developed
a competitive International
Programs Faculty Grant. Since 1999 this program has awarded 435 faculty
members with grants to expand and develop International Programs at SDSU.
The OIP also provides
support for the U.S. Fulbright Program. This year American Indian Studies
professor Dr. Alan Kilpatrick received a 2005-2006 faculty Fulbright Grant
to conduct research in Spain. For the 2003-2004 grant cycle five faculty
members received awards, a record for number SDSU.
Student Fulbright
activity is also on the rise, to date three students have received grants
for the 2005-2006 cycle to study in the Netherlands, Germany and Mexico.
