CHINA STUDIES INSTITUTE  REBORN AS CHINA INSTITUTE

Adopting the Phoenix as its symbol, a Chinese symbol of perfect goodness
and beauty, creative power and poetic imagination, as ancient as the more
prominent Dragon, the China Institute has now arisen from the SDSU China
Studies Institute. CSI was founded in 1989, with Professor Paochin Chu of
the Department of History serving as the first Director. After months of
meetings, deliberations, and committee consultations under the leadersip of
currrent Director Professor Li-Rong L. Cheng, Communicative Disorders, the
SDSU China Studies Institute has renamed itself the China Institute.
Since the Phoenix is said to appear only in times of peace and prosperity,
its campus manifestation bodes well for all.
