MEETING SUMMARY

CHINA STUDIES INSTITUTE MEETING

February 2, 2001

MISSION STATEMENT
The following phrasing of the CI Mission Statement, originally drafted by
Professor Bill Rogers, was accepted by the members as reflective of the
envisioned role of CI:

The China Studies Institute at San Diego State University exists to foster
the understanding of  greater China and the Chinese diaspora in all its
manifestations—cultural, linguistic, political, economic, scientific, and
interpersonal.  For faculty it serves as a focal point for funding,
information sharing, and the coordination of research.

For students it seeks to provide scholarship support and funding, to
facilitate exchange and research programs, and to create opportunities for
internships in mainland China, Hong Kong, and other Chinese-speaking areas.

For the community it sponsors and co-sponsors a wide range of lectures,
presentations, and cultural events.

As a good will ambassador, it coordinates visits of scholars, dignitaries,
and other visitors to San Diego State University.

 CHINA INSTITUTE WEBSITE
Professor Ming-Hsiang Tsou presented a print-out of the new website pages.
After discussion, the following topics were agreed upon for inclusion on
the homepage:

         Newsletter
         Internship Opportunities
         Web Links
         Members
         Exchange Programs
         Curriculum
         Announcements
         Community Events
         Research

Bill noted this should be considered as a “work-in-progress,” subject to
future modifications, with the main focus on campus resources rather than
those off campus.

CONTINUED DISCUSSION OF FUNCTION OF CI
Ci Director Professor Lilly Cheng noted that the Mission Statement served
as a “starting point” for discussion. Several projects were set for the new
semester:

                  co-sponsorship of lectures
                  establishment of the website
                  completion of the brochure
                  working to “regroup” CI forces

UPDATE MEMBER LIST AND BROCHURE
Professor Allen Wittenborn has been compiling an updated member list. Those
present were asked to search out potential members through personal
contacts and report back to Allen.
Sample brochures were presented by Professor Sandra A. Wawrytko on a
variety of stock, some with the name of the Institute in red ink, to give a
sense of the options. The newly agreed upon list of topics from the website
also will be incorporated into the brochure. Professor P. C. was asked to
provide a brief history of and rationale for the organization, to be
included on the outside of the brochure. A general preference was expressed
for textured stock in a pale shade of green, with a change of font.

Lilly announced the Chinese New Year Fair to be held in downtown San Diego
at 3rd and J, Saturday 11-6 and Sunday 11-4. Hsi Fang Temple also will hold
