NEW!  SDSU China Educational and Cultural Tour 2005!

(Download the Cover Letter -- PDF format)

College of Arts and Letters

August 24, 2004

Dear Alumni, Friends and Associates of San Diego State University:

It is with great pleasure that we announce the San Diego State University College of Arts and Letters 2005 China Educational and Cultural tour commencing on May 23, 2005 and finishing on June 6, 2005.

This is the first time the college is taking on such a project.  We have carefully planned the trip to include major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai as well as small towns such as Yicheng and Suzhou.  We want to introduce the old China by touring the Great Wall near Beijing which Emperor Qing started and the terra cotta soldiers which were excavated in Xian.  We will take you through the alleys of old Shanghai and savor the new flavor of modern Pudong.  The tour will take you through Suzhou and Hongzhou, the Venice of China.  There is a Chinese saying: Above us there is heaven, down below there are Suzhou and Hongzhou. You will get to taste the best Chinese tea and learn how silk is made.

The highlight of the trip is to take a cruise from the mountain city of Chongqing down the mother river of China, the famous Yangtze River.  We will cruise down the river through the fabulous three gorges, Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge and take a small boat to the three lesser (smaller) gorges.  You will be able to take a last glimpse of the ancient towns, cities, temples and antiquities along the banks of the Yangtze River because the water will be raised once the dam is in operation.  You will visit the largest dam project in the world - the Ge-Zhou dam.

China is fascinating to many. This educational cultural tour will be once in a life time opportunity to see the country with your own eyes.  The college will provide at least two lectures given by faculty members before your depart on the trip.  During the trip, there will be lectures given each day.  In addition, you will get a list of recommended books as well as substantial reading materials before you leave so that you can be prepared to embark on this journey.

Please join us on this wonderful voyage.  We guarantee that you will have a most memorable and unforgettable trip.  If you are interested, please contact our tour coordinator, Julia Chang, at tel.619.594.4793 fax.619.594.6281 or by email. changc@rohan.sdsu.edu .

Sincerely yours,

Paul Wong                                                             Lilly Cheng

Spring  2002 Courses: (New!)

PHILOSOPHY 351, CHINESE PHILOSOPHY IN CULTURAL CONTEXT
Instructor: Dr. Sandra A. Wawrytko
Schedule:  MWF 2-2:50pm.

A chronological exploration of Chinese thought, beginning with a

philosophical common ground laid out in the earliest text, the Yi Jing, and
extending through contemporary philosophers. Uncover the secrets of Asia's
Economic Miracles deep within Confucian doctrines and Chinese culture.
Learn about the Daoist grounding for Sun Zi's "Methods of Warfare,"
carefully studied by the likes of Napolean, Mao Zedong, and the U.S.
military. Discover the philosophical profundity of Chinese poets, as
metaphor merges into metaphysical flights. Take a "Leisurely Stroll"
through the deconstructed mindscape of the Daoist Zhuang Zi, butterfly
dreamer. Marvel at the audacity of China's Chan Buddhist monks, as they
stretch the limits of pedagogy to teach the mind of no-mind. Meet Mo Zi,
leader of revolutionary armies, whose radical message of Universal Love was
doomed to oblivion--was he a far-sighted philosopher or a dangerous
fanatic. You decide!
