Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Math 65 or the equivalent skill level as determined by the SWC Mathematics Assessment.

 

Course description: This is an introductory class of practical statistics. Specific topics include:

·         Picturing data with graphs

·         Describing Distributions with numbers

·         Normal distributions

·         Correlation

·         First order least squares curve fitting—linear regression

·         Sampling

·         Experiment design

·         Elementary probability

·         Samples and Populations

·         Binomial distributions

·         Confidence intervals

·         Tests of significance

·         Inference errors

·         Inferring a population mean

·         Inferring a population proportion

 

Required Textbooks and Materials:

 

1) Basic Practice of Statistics Fourth Edition, by David Moore.

 

2) Graphing Calculator (TI 83+) or similar model.

 

3) Minitab Software 

 

Grading: (Out of 1000 points)

 

·         Group Project  = 100

·         Homework = 100

·         Midterms (4) = 600

·         Comprehensive Final Exam = 150

·         Participation  = 50

     Total 1000.

 

Your lowest Midterm score will be dropped.

Therefore No make-up Midterms or Final permitted for any reason.

Final Exam is scheduled for this class on: Mon. May 19, 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

 

Grades will be decided by the standard:

90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69%=D, Less than 60%=F

 

 

Attendance:

 

Attendance is taken daily at the beginning of class and also after break.

 

·         A student may be dropped from the class for excessive absences.

·         If you have more than 4 unexcused absences, you will be dropped and receive a “W” or and “F” depending the date dropped.

·         If you have more than 8 combined excused & unexcused absences, you will be dropped and receive a “W” or an “F” depending the date dropped.

·         Arriving late or leaving early more than 3 times will be counted as an absence.

·         Excessive tardiness will result in being dropped from the class.

·         During class your cell phone/pager should be off.

·         If you know you need to leave class early, or if you arrive late, take a seat near the door.

Tutoring and Academic Success Center Referral: To further your success, reinforce concepts, and achieve the stated learning objectives for this course, I refer you to the Academic Success Center learning assistance services. Upon request for tutorial service, you will be automatically enrolled in a course called: NC3 Supervised Tutoring. This course is a free, non-credit course that does not appear on your transcripts. This is done to meet the state’s funding requirements in Title V. All (FREE!) Mathematics tutoring services are at the following locations on the main campus (check locations for schedule and open hours):

You should keep an organized binder or notebook. Set-up in three sections:

Section 1: Class notes and handouts by date.

Section 2: Completed homework assignments by section number.

Section 3: Exams and their corrections.
