This Spring Semester
Posted on April 30, 2008 - Filed Under Administrative Posts, Meetings, SPS Events | Comments Off
Hi guys, Rick speaking.
I know this semester has been a little less than exciting in the SPS department. We didn’t manage to find a good meeting time early on and it just never came together. Thankfully, we’ve got Derek holding up the free tutoring and we managed to get one high school visit in our outreach program. We’ve received all we need for the SPS library and generous donations from the family of Professor Ferguson. We just need to do a little spring cleaning.
We’ve still got the end of the year event to plan and decide on so if any of you have any good ideas just send a message or shoot an idea out to the sps gmail account or to Kristen or myself.
For those of you who are doing presentations this semester, I thought we might host a practice run, perhaps on multiple days before the finals. We’ve done so in the past and it was pretty successful. This time around, we can use our SPS money to provide some food and refreshments. Once again, feel free to harass myself or Kristen regarding it.
As for the state of the club, we’ve got to elect some new officers for the Fall, which we can do at the trial presentations if we still can’t manage a good meeting time. So those of you who are remaining… Spencer. Can jump in and make this club great again.
Any questions? Ideas? Comments?
Rick

Hello SPS!

Kristen sent a group email as usual with meeting notes from Monday.. Please be sure you are receiving the mail properly. It is sent from a mailing list so watch your spam folder and approve us. Otherwise, please email us to let us know.
Brief overview of the email:
Mexico will not happen this semester…
Camping is still on for the evening of the 10th. Those who can go, please RSVP to Kyle or our SPS email. Those unable to go, please consider donating some time to Dr. T. for Innerspace Outerspace.
Kristen wants a T-Shirt…. you guys better want them too or we can’t print them. Details of our famous Dr. Morris 357 survival shirt and standard logo shirt in the email.
Don’t forget to check/add the SPS Google Calendar.
See you in the lab,

San Diego Wildfires and Event Cancellations

Hello SPS!
I hope that everyone is doing well in these times of chaos. I hope you all aren’t slacking off thinking this is some sort of vacation. I am praying for everyone (Kyle, don’t get started with that believing in God in a deterministic world business).
If any of you are in trouble and need anything feel free to contact me and I’m sure SPS will rise to the occasion. (navarro_AT_sciences.sdsu.edu)
Because of these fires, Compact for Success has been canceled this Saturday so no meeting pre-event. I’m not sure if Mexico will happen, so harass Derek about that. Though I did hear that because the national guard has been busy fighting fires, the border has become flooded with illegal immigration. It was on the news, but well… what can you say about the news in crisis?
Stay safe SPSers and I’ll see you next week
Rick

So, I’m blaming El Nino for our missed Mexico trip. We’ll try again Oct. 27th. That is the same day as Compact for Success so we’ll be heading out after that. Hopefully the weather will hold up for us that day.

Mexico Lobster This Weekend!
Posted on October 8, 2007 - Filed Under SPS Events | Leave a Comment
Hola, fellow physics students! We are heading south of the border this weekend to the small town of Puerto Nuevo to partake in some outstanding lobster dining. We’ll meet in P247 at noon on Saturday and drive down to the San Ysidro boarder crossing, park, and walk across. From there, we catch a cab which will take us strait to Puerto Nuevo. The restaurant we’ll eat at is great! $15 buys you two and a half lobster tails, melted butter, tortilla soup, beans, rice, tortillas, chips, salsa, guacamole, a margarita, and a shot of tequila. I’ve (Derek) eaten here many times and have never had a bad meal. After eating we can walk around and look at the little Mexican barter shops and buy whatever if we want. We should be back across the boarder by around 4PM. As for prices, you should try and bring cash (preferable smaller bills) totaling at least $40. The cab shouldn’t be too expensive but $40 should cover any worst-case scenario. If you have any questions just shoot an email or stop by P247. Hope to see you there!
