Fall
2005 Panhellenic Recruitment
Panhellenic
Association Recruitment Process
(General Sororities)
The
fall recruitment process for the general residential
sororities is more structured. Registration is required,
along with a $35 registration fee ($45 for late registrants).
To avoid conflicts with classes, recruitment events
start on Thursday evening and continue during the
weekend and end on Tuesday night. Participants attend
events at all nine chapters on Thursday and Friday
nights (four or five events each evening).
Recruitment
is a mutual selection process. After each days
events, potential members will priority rank the sororities
and the sororities submit their invitation list for
the subsequent day. A computer program is then used
to create a personalized schedule for each participant.
There are a decreasing number of events each day,
and on the last night (Monday) participants will go
to "Preference Parties" at two chapters.
Chapters then submit rank-ordered lists of women to
whom they wish to extend "bids" (invitations
to join) and the potential members rank order the
sororities in which they are most interested.
To
promote equity in the recruitment process, each sorority
is permitted to pledge a maximum number of women,
so a "bid matching" process determines which
sorority each participant will join. Participants
find out on Tuesday afternoon which chapter has offered
them a bid, and a celebration activity is held for
the new members afterward. Most participants are pledged
to their first choice. Chapters that have not reached
the membership maximum established by Panhellenic
may continue to extend bids throughout the remainder
of the semester. This is called "open recruitment"
or "continuous open bidding (COB)." Some
chapters are usually eligible to pledge additional
women in the spring semester, and the Panhellenic
Association organizes a coordinated recruitment in
the spring, but it is typically much more informal
than the fall process.
