Essrhir has arrived at SDSU to work with the Center for Islamic
and Arabic Studies. He is Assistant Professor at Abdelmalik Essaadi
University in Morrocco, and specializes in culture and identity representation
in British and American literature and Islamic and Arabic Studies.

The
U.S. Fulbright Program was established in 1946 to "enable the
government of the United States to increase mutual understanding
between people of the United States and other countries." It
pursues this goal through the international exchange of students,
scholars, and professionals. Opportunities are given to undertake
graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching
in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
The
program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and is administered
by Institute of International Education.
Funding is provided through an annual Congressional appropriations.
Costs are also shared by participating hosts institutions in the
form of salary supplements, tuition waivers and university housing. |

Traditional
Fulbright Scholar Program
The Traditional
Fulbright Scholar Program is responsible for sending 800 U.S. faculty
and professionals abroad each year to lecture and conduct research
in a variety of academic and professional fields.
Requirements:
-U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application
-A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree
-College or university teaching experience in the field specified
in application
-Foreign language proficiency
-Sound physical and mental health
-Previous Fulbright scholar grantees must wait three years before
applying

Fulbright
Distinguished Chairs Program
The Fulbright
Distinguished Chairs Program is considered one of the most prestigious
appointments in the Fulbright Scholars Program.
Requirements:
-U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application
-A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree
-College or university teaching experience in the field specified
in application
-Foreign language proficiency (only if specified in the award description
or required for the completion of the proposed project)
-Sound physical and mental health
-Previous Fulbright scholar grantees must wait three years before
applying
-Disclosure of prior conviction or current indictment for commission
of a felony
-Candidates should refer to the CIES website for specifics regarding
eligibility
How
to apply:
Applicants must submit hard copies of the following (no later than
May 1)
-A letter of interest, including a statement stating appropriateness
for the position and professional reasons for seeking the appointment
-A curriculum vitae
-A sample syllabus for the proposed course
-Applications will be prescreened by a peer review committee, then
a small number of candidates will be invited to formally apply for
the Fulbright program by August 1

Fulbright
Senior Specialists Program
The Fulbright
Senior Specialists Program provides grants for short-term exchanges
(two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals. The shorter
length allows specialists to maintain current academic or professional
commitments.
Requirements:
-U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application
-For academics, a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of application
plus a minimum of five years of post-doctoral teaching or professional
experience in the field in which you are applying
-For non-academic professionals, recognized professional standing
and significant professional accomplishments plus a minimum of five
years of professional experience in the field in which you are applying
-Must be residing in the United States at the time of grant approval
and intend to return to home U.S. institution after the grant's
completion.

reviewed quarterly.
Fulbright
International Education Administrators Program
-These seminars
are intended to introduce participants to the society, culture and
higher education systems of these countries through campus visits,
meetings with foreign colleagues and government officials, attendance
at cultural events and briefings on education.
Requirements:
-U.S. citizenship
-Must be an international education professional or senior university
administrator with substantial responsibility for international
programs and activities
-Affiliation with an accredited college or university or nonprofit
international exchange organization
-A minimum of three years of work experience in international education
-A PhD is not required
-TEFL administrators are ineligible for this program

Fulbright
German Studies Seminar
This is a
grant to participate in a two week group seminar on current German
society and culture. Each seminar has a specific theme. It will
begin in Berlin and visit other German cities. It is designed for
U.S. scholars in Germanic studies and related disciplines.
