College of Professional Studies

and Fine Arts

Program Features

  • One-to-one mentoring with an upperclassman

The PSFA mentoring program has an on-campus office and a mentor-protégé resource room that offers the use of four computers with Internet access. In the office, Protégés and Mentors can meet socially, study in small groups, and complete homework or program assignments.

  • University credit for fall semester participation

Academic and social workshops are offered weekly for protégés. Workshops vary from teaching computer or study skills, to handling personal finances and time management. Students participating in weekly workshops can earn a unit of credit by signing up for GS 250: “University Seminar with Mentoring.”

  • Scholarship program for outstanding protégés
  • Honor Roll reception during the spring semester

Academic success is highly valued. Once a year, an honor roll reception is held for Protégés and Mentors attaining a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher. Outstanding protégés are eligible for the Laurin Jones or Andrew Gutrierrez Memorial Scholarships.

  • “Bucks for B’s” program to promote academic excellence

The “Bucks for B’s” program is held throughout the year. Students earning a “B-”or better on any project, test, or homework assignment, earn a raffle ticket for a drawing for gift certificates at the end of each semester.

  • Diversity Dinner and reception during the fall semester
  • Volunteer opportunities with the SDSU Child Care Center and the Best Families Mentoring program from UCSD

Once a semester, the group participates in a community service project. Service projects include making holiday cards for children and cleaning up the Child Care Center.

  • On-campus mentoring and study center

The program also has a social component. Mentors plan recreational activities that give protégés a chance to meet other students and take a break from their rigorous school routines. Examples of social activities include:  bowling and pizza parties, potlucks, and barbecues at the beach.

All Colleges at San Diego State University have a Mentoring Program, but PSFA’s program is the largest and one of the most diverse in academic majors. To accommodate the various disciplines, the staff includes ten to twenty mentors from at least nine different majors. Protégés can therefore select a mentor who shares their academic interests.
