Professor Renatte K. Adler, Director

Professor Adler created her internship courses so that students would have an opportunity to apply their classroom studies in the real world. Originally from New Mexico, where she received her doctorate in Economics, she came to San Diego State in 1981 to work on environmental policy issues. Today, because of over 20 years experience with internships for 4,000+ undergraduates, she has developed a research model to explore the value to students and society of experiential learning as an integral part of the university curriculum.

She started the Internship Program in 1985 because she wanted students to begin looking beyond the classroom and into the real world. As an Economics professor, she found her students had not been encouraged to think about how economic theories applied in the world of business and government, nor in the context of students' own personal decisions regarding careers.

When the International Business major was first offered at SDSU in 1991, Professor Adler was asked to spearhead internship efforts for the new major's students. Since then, about 15% have interned in 50 other countries, and that number continues to grow. She has established internship exchanges with universities and companies in Costa Rica, Paris and Moscow. Each semester, her interns provide staffing for International Trade offices in over 150 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.
