Preparing to study abroad

Who & Where? (Eligibility and Programs)

French / German / Italian / Portuguese / Spanish

In order to study abroad you must:

  • Attend the mandatory orientations 1 semester prior to your intended study abroad (see below for orientation details).
  • Have declared upper division in the major at the time of application submission (studying abroad on your last semesters IS NOT recommended).
  • Have completed or are currently registered for 2 approved 300/400-level language courses (3 recommended for students of French emphasis).
  • Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA that will be maintained up to the point of departure to abroad institution.
  • Have good academic standing at the time of application submission.

Arabic / Chinese / Japanese / Russian

In order to study abroad you must:

  • Attend the mandatory orientations 1 semester prior to your intended study abroad (see below for orientation details).
  • Have declared Pre-IB (upper division in the major status not required).
  • Have completed or be currently registered for lower division language courses.
  • Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA that will be maintained up to the point of departure to abroad institution.
  • Have good academic standing at the time of application submission.

Mandatory Orientations

IB Study abroad general orientation

Available programs are officially announced and highlighted. Application procedures are described and advisors are available for specific questions.

These are offered on 4 different occasions during the first 2 months of each semester. 

The next set of General Orientations are:

Tuesday, February 5th -- 12-2pm
Wednesday, February 6th -- 2-4pm
Thursday, February 7th -- 12-2pm
Friday, February 8th -- 10am-12pm

Location: International Business Office Conference Room (AL-208).
 
Seating for these orientations is limited and may not be available at the last minute.  It is recommended that you reserve your space by calling 619-594-4505 well in advance. Late arrivals will not be admitted.  Please plan ahead!

Pre-departure orientation

This orientation will include topics surrounding health and safety, cultural adjustment, travel logistics and will be an opportunity to meet with returnees or international students associated with the foreign universities.

This session is typically 1 to 1 ½ months before the end of each semester.
