The Historic Archive of Santa María Atzompa
The Historic Archive of Santa María Atzompa (HASMA) is currently undergoing a massive reorganization with the ultimate goal of making its treasures available to students, scholars, and the community at large. The first phase of this project was completed in July 2006 with a comprehensive inventory of documents that included land dispute records from the late colonial period, birth and death certificates from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and a small collection of maps tracing the community’s growth over the past three hundred years.
Each subsequent year, a team of students from the Ethnographic Field Methods course will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty to continue rebuilding the archive by organization and cataloguing these valuable sources. A concurrent project to construct the community’s political genealogy using sources from HASMA is expected in the near future.
