Jeff Overton
Executive Vice President/Business Operations for the San Diego Padres Baseball Club

On Monday, August 21, 2006, SDSU’s Sports Business Management MBA program was honored to host Jeff Overton, Executive Vice President/Business Operations for the San Diego Padres Baseball Club, for a special presentation to the second cohort of Sports MBA students.

A veteran of 24 years in professional baseball, Jeff Overton is in his fourth season with the Padres as the club’s Executive Vice President/ Business Operations.  In this role, he provides oversight for all marketing, communications, community relations and special event activities of the club.  During his expansive career in the sports industry, Mr. Overton has served as General Manager of the Class A, Midwest League’s Appleton Foxes; Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Director of Sales and Promotions for the Chicago White Sox; National Sports Marketing Director for the Miller Brewing Company’s sports account with Rogers Merchandising; Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for the Cleveland Indians;  Executive Vice President of Marketing for both the Texas Rangers and the NHL’s Dallas Stars; and now Executive Vice President/Business Operations for the San Diego Padres.

As a Sports Management masters graduate himself, Mr. Overton understands the valuable and, nowadays, essential skills being taught to SDSU’s Sports MBA students.  Despite a late night at the ballpark seeing his team through a thrilling 10th inning victory over the NL West rival Arizona Diamondbacks, Mr. Overton came to the classroom excited to talk with the students about the lessons he has learned in the baseball industry.

Recognizing the students were in the process of taking a World Business Environment class, Mr. Overton focused his discussion on the recent World Baseball Classic (WBC) hosted by the Padres at PETCO Park, and the international initiatives pursued by the Padres organization.  Regarding the WBC, he discussed the benefits provided to the Padres by hosting the event, both regionally and internationally.  He talked about the logistics and politics of hosting the event, and the final results of ticket sales.  Mr. Overton then discussed various international initiatives employed by the Padres.  He detailed the close relationship with the Mexican professional leagues, and the recent emphasis placed on the Dominican Republic.

After a question and answer period that provided specific insight into various areas of individual interest, Mr. Overton offered his personal advice to the class as they near completion of their Sports MBA studies and begin their journey into the sports business world.  His insight and personal appeal was truly valued by the class, and the students and staff wish to thank Mr. Overton for dedicating the time to make such a special visit.
