Kathleen Davis
Founder and Executive Director, Sports Management Research Institute

On Monday, August 21, 2006, students in San Diego State University's Sports Business Management MBA program were pleased to welcome Dr. Kathleen Davis to the classroom.

Dr. Kathleen Davis is the Executive Director of the Sport Management Research Institute (SMRI) which she founded in 1995. At SMRI, Dr. Davis has led commissioned research on leisure trends in the marketplace for nearly 100 sports facilities worldwide. Originally from Southern California, Dr. Davis earned her M.S. and PhD in Sport Management from the University of Southern California. She has taught Sport Management at Tulane University, Rice University, Northeastern University and Florida Atlantic University. Prentice-Hall published her textbook, Sport Management: Private Sector Business Strategies, in 1994.

Dr. Davis has also written for FoxSport.com, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and Stadium & Arena Management Journal, and her research has been cited in a variety of publications including The New York Times, New York Post, Crain’s Business, Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, Miami Today, New Orleans City Beat, Smith/Street Sport Business, Miami Herald, Fast Track Magazine, Sport Daily News and Miami Today. Additionally, she has been interviewed by CBS and NBC regarding her research of NFL’s Super Bowl.

As a guest speaker in the students’ Seminar in Marketing Research class, Dr. Davis provided practical insight into the application of the lessons being taught to the students.  She shared with the class lessons learned in the initial stages of her career in sports marketing, and the key elements to her successful founding of SMRI.  She discussed the importance of expert knowledge of the client and issue, and strategies employed in creating an effective market survey.
