Robb Arent
Senior Consultant at The Leib Group

The Sports Business Mangement MBA program at San Diego State University recently welcomed Robb Arent for two guest lectures. Mr. Arent has been a Senior Consultant at The Leib Group since its inception in 1999. Prior to joining in the formation of The Leib Group, Arent worked in the Professional Sports Advisory Practice at Arthur Andersen. He is currently Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for World Sport Ventures Ltd., the holding company for three professional soccer teams including a Division 1 club in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Arent discussed legal aspects of the non-major sports, including the impact of the Sherman and Clayton Acts on single entity leagues such as Major League Soccer. He also covered publicity rights and broadcast video rights, and discussed how these issues can be important clauses in both player contracts and lease contracts.

Mr. Arent gave a presentation on the Xtreme Football League (XFL), discussing the formation of the league and sharing stories from his years as Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of the XFL’s San Francisco Demons. He spoke about the promotion and hype of the fledgling organization, the eventual dissolution of the concept, and engaged the class in a discussion of what changes may have helped the league succeed.

Mr. Arent's second lecture focused on his team valuation efforts with the Leib Group. He presented students with an example of the materials he produced while performing a comprehensive valuation of a major professional sports franchise. This analysis included mathematical formulas for valuing player contracts, including adjustments for skill, position, experience, the player market, and the cost of player development. He discussed the amortization of various assets and how different methods of calculating the taxation on these assets can affect the valuation process and thus the overall purchase price for a franchise.

San Diego State University and the students in the Sports Business MBA program wish to thank Mr. Arent for sharing his time and expertise with the class.
