Professor David Alexander
Prominent attorney and sports law professor
Prominent attorney and sports law professor David Alexander lectured the students in the Sports Business Management MBA program on November 11 and 14, 2005. Mr. Alexander is currently employed by MVB Law LLP in San Francisco, CA, which he joined following stints at several large law firms and the U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Alexander is an active member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of California, where he serves on the Antitrust Section, Subcommittee on Sports and Entertainment Law. He also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of San Francisco Law School and the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. Mr. Alexander is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received both his undergraduate and law degrees.

Lecturing on how antitrust law pertains to the sports world, Mr. Alexander first covered the legal background of the issue, including the Sherman Act, Clayton Act, and Robinson-Patman Act. He cited examples of antitrust litigation with the AFL-NFL, NASL-NFL and NIT-NCAA and explained the different forms of antitrust violations. He also discussed the formation of the single-entity Major League Soccer and covered the details of ownership that affect a single entity league. He covered licensing issues for MLB, and spoke about his experience as the lawyer for Adidas in a legal dispute against Major League Baseball Properties stemming from the company's agreement with the New York Yankees.

San Diego State University would like to thank Mr. Alexander for clearly explaining this complex sports legal concept to the Sports MBA students.
