GRADUATION

Yes, I actually thought that once I had my research done and my dissertation written and defended, that it would be smooth sailing to graduation and out the door to the real world. I'm finding there are a few hoops to jump through to actually get to graduation. And, because this is a joint doctoral program, there are twice as many hoops.

Since I have to figure this whole thing out for myself anyways (because I do have a control issue when it comes to filings and forms), I thought I'd share this information with anyone else who is interested and equally confused with the graduation process.

If you're reading this prior to my final graduation, then it is a work in progress. I'll update it with information as I go along the process. Wish me luck!

1

Register in 499 at CGU the term you plan to defend/submit dissertation
(the term is according to Claremont's Academic Calendar)
(ex. for spring 2008 graduation submit by April 18th, for summer 2008 graduation submit by July 25th. NOTE: There is no summer offering, so if you want to graduate in the CGU summer, you will need to register for the course in the spring)

UPDATE: My plan is to defend in August, and although that is within the summer semester, it doesn't qualify (timewise) for a summer graduation, thus, I will graduate in December and will register for 499 in the Fall 2008.

2

Apply for graduation at SDSU
(Go to the Graduate Division to get the forms and file it with the appropriate fee at the Cashier's Office)
(ex. for spring 2008 graduation apply by Feb. 11th, for summer 2008 graduation apply by May 30th)

3
Apply for graduation at Claremont
(contact Edris in the Graduate office to find out the deadline) You will need the Intent to Graduate form (which is linked here).
4
Dissertation formatting is according to Claremont requirements.
The title page must include the name of both Universities and both cities.
5
At the defense, be sure to have your committee sign the JDP5 form ... given that you've passed. You will need the signatures of all committee members and both graduate advisors/directors.
6

Take the JDP5 to Claremont and submit the dissertation.
Claremont will sign off on it, and send to SDSU

Upon Claremont approval, bring a copy of the dissertation to SDSU (with an extra copy of the title page and signature page for their records).

The Intent to Graduate form from CGU also has an extensive survey. Give a copy of the survey to SDSU.

SDSU will fill out a Clearance Sheet, verifying that the student is registered in 499.

Take the Clearance Sheet, and the dissertation to Montezuma Publishing and pay to have it bound.

They will send SDSU a receipt that this has been done.

SDSU will then get our Deans' signature on the JDP 5 and send the original to Claremont for their Deans' final signature, and will send a final copy to SDSU.
