Introduction to the interaction between economic development and social change in the 20th century, particularly since the Pacific War. Strong comparative focus emphasizing such specific topics as urbanization, demographic change, mechanization, and family and gender relations.

300 ASIA'S GLOBAL FUTURE
GE Explorations
Interdisciplinary survey of contemporary Asia and its future prospects, exploring the meaning of globalization for Asia; modernization/ westernization; religion/philosophy; historical background; politics/international relations; business/economics; culture and social issues.

303 IMPERIALISM AND NATIONALISM
GE Foundations
Comparative exploration of the relationship between imperialism and the rise of Asia Pacific nation-states in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the aim of understanding the sociopolitical diversity of this region.

310 DIASPORAN COMMUNITIES
GE Explorations
Comparative, interdisciplinary exploration of the diverse processes, economic, political, and cultural, shaping the formation and continued growth of diasporan communities in the Asia Pacific. Historical origins and contemporary status will be analyzed.

330 CHANGING PATTERNS OF CONSUMPTION
Interdisciplinary exploration to understand the impact of globalization and modernization on changing consumption patterns and diverse Asian cultures.

351 LITERARY HORIZONS
GE Explorations
Fiction, drama, and poetry in East and Southeast Asia. Discussion of Asian and Western influences on writing in the Asia Pacific. Consideration of major writers and/or genres as they reflect contemporary social and cultural values.

360 RESEARCH AND WRITING ASIA
Upper Division Writing Requirement
Introduces students to interdisciplinary approaches to study the Asia Pacific. Attention will be paid to critiquing how contemporary images of this region have been constructed and transmitted.

440 NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS
GE Explorations
An exploration of the relationship between new religious movements and traditional forms of religious practice and expression from Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. Religious syncretism will be featured prominently.

506 WAR AND MEMORY IN THE PACIFIC
Comprehensive, comparative examination of historiography of the Pacific War and the problems associated with historical evidence, memory, authentication, and the political uses of history.

530 MEDIA AND POPULAR CULTURE
Media and popular culture in Asia have an ambivalent role, they can be both instruments of social control and agencies of emancipation, as well as expressions of global western power and a means through which local identities are revitalized.

531 INTELLECTUAL & SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS
Examination of contributions by Asia's intellectual and spiritual leaders to global culture in terms of metaphysics, epistemology, socio-political philosophy and ethics, highlighting the continuum with tradition.

533 MINORITIES AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Comparative, comprehensive examination of human rights regimes and the status of minorities in parts of the Asia Pacific; examines the notion of "Universal Rights."
